چکیده

ABSTRACT: The brown howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) is a primate species widely distributed in South America. Infections by protozoa are common primates. However, studies on primates Brazil scarce, so the goal of this study was to investigate DNA from apicomplexan Neospora caninum, Sarcocystis spp. and Toxoplasma gondii tissues A. clamitans. extraction performed tissue samples heart, brain, liver, spleen, lung intestine six clamitans Santa Maria, Central Region Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Conventional PCR using 18S rRNA gene general primers for Apicomplexa also specific amplify Neosporaspp. DNA. All animals were positive genetic sequencing confirmed presence four belonging at least two (S. neurona S. gigantea) T. other animals. One sample genotypically characterized as atypical restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. N. caninum not detected tested samples. protozoan highlights importance monkeys maintainers these pathogens nature.

This study was carried out in the Chácara Payquerê do Bugre, State of Paraná, Southern Brazil (25o29’52”S and 49o39’24”W) and reports on the demography of a group of Alouatta guariba clamitans Cabrera, 1940 followed monthly during three years (from February, 2002 to March, 2005). The growth and subsequent fission of the group are described and argued, as well as their possible underlying causes...

Antibodies against Apicomplexa protozoa and absence sarcocysts in heart tissues from horses in southern Brazil.

Sarcocystis spp., Neospora spp., and Toxoplasma gondii are Apicomplexa protozoa that can infect horses. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of antibodies against Sarcocystis spp., Neospora spp., and T. gondii in horses slaughtered in southern Brazil. The presence of histological lesions, tissue cysts, and Sarcocystis spp. DNA in the hearts of these horses was also investigated. A tot...

Detection of Plasmodium in faeces of the New World primate Alouatta clamitans

Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax have evolved with host switches between non-human primates (NHPs) and humans. Studies on the infection dynamics of Plasmodium species in NHPs will improve our understanding of the evolution of these parasites; however, such studies are hampered by the difficulty of handling animals in the field. The aim of this study was to detect genomic DNA of Plasmo...
